How the part of my brain responsible for summoning up enthusiasm for drawing works:

Have 2 weeks (mostly) off work, no obligations and weather too miserable to venture outside: should we draw? NO. SLEEPING UNTIL NOON AND DRAGON AGE FOREVER.

Have crazy exhausting flustered two weeks, in the lab at weekends, dealing with a huge experiment and not sleeping terribly well because of it: YES TIME TO DRAW DRAW DRAW DRAW!!!

I am not sure this is the best way to go about things. Anyway, art! I felt a bit rusty after the endless days marathoning Dragon Age (man, this would totally be my new fandom if the fandom weren't so spectacularly wanky), so did another palette meme over on Tumblr. I probably should have had a think about whether I actually liked these colours before going for it because ew, they're not great and the lack of contrast made me rage, but I suppose that makes it a challenge.

Penny Dreadful: Vanessa Ives, Mina Harker. Where is my season 2 and Sir Malcom's hot stern whiskery face and Helen McRory being amazing, I want it nowwww.

The Eagle: younger Esca with the tame otter from the book.

The Dark Knight Rises: John Blake.

Star Wars: Princess Leia.

Inception: Arthur, Eames, Saito, more Arthur.

(stop judging me for these colours, I didn't pick them)

(bigger version than the others because I'm very fond of how this one turned out. And yes, that shirt is far too large and garish to be his own)

And finally, not a palette meme drawing, but a stupid little sketch of my Dragon Age Inquisitor and his hot Tevinter boyfriend (oh, Dorian ♥♥♥) grooming their facial hair. My poor inquisitor gets very insecure when he goes to visit Blackwall and his far superior beard. :(

Blimey, those are some difficult palettes.

And some excellent facial hair there *applauds the moustaches*

They were! I particularly hated the ones that were just different shades of the same hue, made it downright impossible to produce anything that wasn't dull and muddy. Poor Esca and his otter deserved better.

I knew I could count on you to appreciate the moustaches! I never had much of an interest in them unless they were attached to a splendid beard, but Dorian and this gentleman have recently converted me into a great admirer of them, provided they are impeccably styled. I rather wish I could grow one myself, it's most unfair that I can't.

God, I love so many of these - Eva Green's face is a goddamn treasure. And my bb, John Blake!

Thank you so much! I adore Eva Green's face, she's got the most amazing features - beautiful, but not in a perfect, flaw-free way, and the things she does with it in Penny Dreadful are incredible. I completely forgive her for that appalling King Arthur show she did a few years back that I attempted to sit through just for her.

Otters!!! So cute!! I don't remember that part from the book at all, but I'm glad you decided to draw it.

Thank you! Confession: I didn't remember the otter part either, but I saw it mentioned somewhere on Tumblr, googled it to make sure it came from the book and not someone's fanfic, and then decided that Esca + adorable little animal was a winning combination.

Princess Leia is not impressed! She's probably directing that look at Han, who thinks he's being extremely charming and manly.

Excellent work with all those palettes! (And the lack of contrast is just... gah. I still struggle with finishing the first round.)

Thanks! Yeah, they're not easy, are they? I don't think I could have done it without a dozen different colour drafts over the sketch before I figured out the best (or least-horrid) way to use them, so I think I would have given up long ago if I had to do it in traditional paint!

I guess in the traditional art, the fun part is actually mixing those colours - I had incredible amount of fun recreating the needed palettes. (There is a reason that I have 11 out of 15 requested characters sketched and only 2 finished, and it isn't laziness! XD Well, not all of it.)

The exercise does help a certain part of the brain get more flexible, though.

Heee! Those palettes are so crazy. But I love what you do. Arthur's expression wearing that shirt, it's just priceless!
You are so talented. Grrr, LOL!!
And of course you get the inspiration to draw when you have least time. Life! Ha.

PS Watched Step Up. Gah. Charming Potato face gets me every time. :D Mmm, dancing. Oh god. Giving myself Tatum/Bacon bunnies that must never surface.

Cheers! And god, you have no idea how much my brain likes to work like that. I finished off a painting that I've had half-done for months this evening, and before I'd finished celebrating lowering the number of files in my WIP folder, I'd accidentally drawn a sketch that is demanding to be coloured properly. Sigh.

I cannot emphasise how much Step Up is Not. My. Kind. Of. Film. And yet I watched it. Shame, so much shame, I hate you for doing this to me Mr Potato. I would totally read a cracky Bacon/Taters dancing story.

1. Vanessa! Love her, love her fancy lace dress and collar.
2. I like Mina's stylized hair. Very cool effect.
4. John Blake! Love the architectural detail in the back, and I think the red palette suits him.
5. I will always <3 Princess Leia and her bun hair.
6. Love Arthur's modern watch and red shirt.
7. Eames <3 love his polka dot shirt
8. Saito <3 I think that's my favorite outfit of his in the whole movie. Such a cool top.
9. Arthur nips! I like how relaxed he looks and how his hair curls. Very fun body position as well.
10. Dorian and the Inquisitor! So cute <3 I like the window background.

Thank you very much x10! Did enjoy drawing Arthur and his nip, despite the photoshop issues - it crashed on my TWICE and I'm terrible at saving regularly, and then I drew all those shirt stripes on the wrong layer and messed everything up.

Also, I have more art finished that I think you'll enjoy. But you have to wait until tomorrow.
