I saw the post 3 lines from 3 WIPs meme going around and decided it was most unfair that I couldn't play too. So instead of three lines, here are three previews of three WIPs, and hopefully this will encourage me to get off my arse and finish them before there's no-one left in either fandom to make vague polite noises when I finally post them!

Crop of Dinoception.psd, approximately 35% of the whole picture:

Ugh, this feels like it's been unfinished since before Inception was even released. I think when I started it I wasn't quite at the stage where I was skilled enough to draw such a complicated picture, and so it's slowly been put together by opening it up every few months, tutting at all the new mistakes my eye spots, redrawing and shifting things around, and then ignoring it for a couple more months. But I think it's picking up steam now! I'm happy with the poses (the reason they look suspiciously neat compared to everything else is because that's about the 8th sketch you see), I've got some of the forground finished, and now I just have to grit my teeth and draw lots of prehistoric ferns and shit until my fingers drop off. But I will, because fucking I love this idea. Eames is blowing up projection dinosaurs with a rocket launcher and Cobb is pointing angrily!

Crop of Eames naked on a Ferrari.psd, approximately 45% of the whole picture (though let's face it, there's not much in the other 55% that anyone's interested in):

Well, the title's pretty self-explanatory, isn't it? This one is fairly recent and hasn't had a huge amount of work done on it besides sorting out the sketch and (just starting to) think about the lighting. I'm probably going overboard with how neat the final sketch is getting (I'm planning on painting this rather than lineart + colour), but given I'm winging it with the light and Eames' upper body I want to be absolutely certain I've got everything in place rather than my usual "oh, I'll figure out the tricky hands and feet when I get to them, let's start painting!" followed shortly by "oh god I don't know what's going on or how toes work" and the accompanying crying.

Full view of Eagle Tearoom Ideas.psd:

So, uh, remember when I mentioned I wanted to work on a film/book fusion quaint tearoom Eagle AU, where Uncle Aquila runs Calleva's local tearoom and serves lovely fish and boiled eggs cups of tea and scones? No, probably not, given that was years and years ago and sometimes I forget I ever had that idea too. The problem with this is similar to the one I had with Dinoception - I have so many ideas for things I want to shove in* and no idea how to structure everything, plus there's the added difficulty of setting it indoors and having even less leeway to fudge perspective. So, uh, this isn't really anything more than a couple of doodles to practice the style I want to do it in, which is uh... yeah, not really like my usual? Stylised art is haaaard.

Obviously the solution to the difficulties I'm having with this Tearoom AU is to go on a tour of all the cafes I can find and gorge myself on afternoon tea. For research.

*Esca and Placidus are getting into an ugly argument over whether it's cream then jam, or jam then cream on one's scones! Sasstica is threatening someone with a wooden spoon! Cottia is not thrilled about being dragged there and made to act ladylike by her aunt! The Seal clan is... well, I'm not sure what to do with them, I'm still mulling over how I get them to look like scary Glaswegians and also like the film characters. Seal-print tracksuits?

EEE YES! So glad you did the meme, these wips are amazing!

One really cannot go wrong with dinosaurs, but GAH at Eames reclining on a Ferrari, because OFC, but I'm excited to see the painting - I don't suppose you'd post ongoing progress WIPs? I've no photoshop skills to speak of and digital art is really fascinating to watch in progress. It's a lovely wip.

Ahhh, Esca and Placidus will never agree, at least not until Uncle Aquila says it's all the same when it gets in your belly, mixes cream and jam together into a paste and slaps it on their scones, and I'm sorry but Cub licking his chops over those cupcakes is THE BEST THING <3

Hooray! And I'm glad you did the meme too, there should be more art WIP memes because I love seeing other people's drafts and half-finished things.

Uh... progress WIPs? Sure, I think I could do that! Occasionally I think about doing those but a) I keep forgetting to take regular screenshots and b) my painting method is Trial and Error and then more Errors and Cry, so for 90% of the process I'm in a state of shame about everything. But I will try with this one! You'll just have to promise not to laugh, or at least keep it to a subtle snigger.

P.S. No, the best thing will be Marcus in a lovely frilly apron. YOU WILL SEE.

I am ssooo psyched about Eames on a Ferrari~! and DINOOSSS

Eames' sweaty arse is is leaving greasy smudges all over the lovely red paintwork of the car! How thoughtless of him. I should draw a sequel to this where Arthur makes him wash the Ferrari thoroughly. In a very small speedo.

If it helps, Eames' expression and overall pose are absolutely perfect....

Ah, thanks! I did have him smirking more on the previous sketch, but now I think I prefer the more haughty look he accidentally picked up. Besides, I overuse smirks terribly when there are so many other expressions I could try.

I think I may have solved my tearoom troubles! While seated upon my Porcelain Throne of Divine Inspiration last night I realised there's no way I'm going to work out how to fit everything into one giant picture, so I should instead do 3 or 4 smaller pictures with a few characters in each. Sorted! Now I am filled with enthusiasm and there is a vague chance that someday, eventually, I'll finish it.

Wasn't there going to be something with Esca's grannie's recipe for Savage / heroic Brigantes Teacake or something..? :-D

Marcus with the tower of cakes is excellent but I particularly love the tearoom sign :-D

Dear me, I'd completely forgotten about Esca's grannie's teacakes, which being a northern delicacy are probably made out of lard and pickled eggs. Well done remembering those, I shall shove them in somewhere!

Cannot wait for all of them! And Eames on the Ferrari, which I am hoping does not have any hood ornaments in awkward places ... or am I? That could be problematical.

Please say that Cub may eat all the cupcakes and thus get filled up quickly, because I want those bon-bon-looking-things that Our Main Man is carrying on the fancy tray's top plate.

I hope I get them all finished this year and don't get too distracted by other things. And also a thesis. Was I supposed to be writing that at some point...?

Pretty sure Cub will end up with his face smeared with cupcake frosting and a very angry Sassticca chasing after him with her wooden spoon. But really, what were they expecting when they let a wolf into a civilised tearoom?

No, probably not, given that was years and years ago and sometimes I forget I ever had that idea too.

Trust me, I will NEVER forget the Eagle Tearoom Idea.

Dinosaurs firsssst. Unless you add dinos to the tearoom....

Dinosaurs in a tearoom would be an even worse idea than letting a grown wolf run free in one!

They could just have...dinosaur-patterned teasets?

You should know that now I'm going to find ways to sneak in hidden dinos into these tearoom drawings, just because.

Oh, how interesting to see art-in-progress! I actually like the blocky effect of the stage of painting you're at with Nude Guy. And Eagle Tearoom, hee! Cub/cupcakes OTP!

I love seeing other people's half-done art too! Though it can be terribly demoralising when someone's messy scribbly sketch is a thousand times more impressive than anything I can do. And yeah, I rather like that blocky stage too - that early part of painting is a mixture of fun and aargh - working out lighting with big hard brushes is delightful, but I struggle with picking the right colours. Thank heavens for photoshop and all it's magical adjustment sliders!

THESE ARE ALL DELICIOUS! The Dinoception one looks fantasticaly complex (all the patience to you on those ferns!), and the Eagle tearoom is absolutely adorable.

Can't wait to see them finished!

Thank you so much! Actually, posting WIPs of them (and getting awesome encouraging comments!) has somehow smited the art block I've been having with them all. I am drawing like a frantic little drawing thing, and enjoying it immensely!

gjdkslajgdksl; aoh my god Dinoception. DINOCEPTION. AUUUGH I LOVE IT SO BAD not that I don't also love Eames on a Ferrari but DINOCEPTIONNNNNN.

... I wish I had something more coherent to say but I'm too busy making dinosaur noises and little claws out of my hands and trying to remember where I saved the doc with the half-finished Dinoception fic in it ...

Excellent, my cunning plan to finish off that drawing and guilt you into finishing the story that I stole the idea from inspired it is slowly progressing! I just hope you're not expecting accurate dinosaurs, or ones that existed all in the same era...

I swear to god it WILL happen, I just need to find my fucking mojo again.

I should put a Stegosaurus in. Because they're my favourite and this will motivate me y?

I hear you on loss of mojo.

Yesssss, whatever motivates you.

From: [identity profile]
I'm almost at the point of wandering around rattling a doggy bowl with MOJO written on it and plaintively calling 'here, girl! Here Mojo!'

STEGOSAURUSES ARE VERY MOTIVATING also I feel like Cobb should have a friend. Perhaps when everyone else is battling Velociraptors, Cobb is trying to dissuade a baby Stegosaurus from following him everywhere. It would be a heartwarming B plot ...

Date: 2015-02-01 09:22 pm (UTC)

Now I feel bad about there being no space left around my Cobb to fit in even a baby Stegosaurus! I will put tiny ones in the background for you. But, uh, Yusuf has been adopted by an itty little ankylosaurus?

I can totally work with Yusuf and an Ankylosaurus! Basically adorable herbivores for the win :D

That tea room idea is genius :D Love the style. So cute.
But the dinosaurs! omg! Awesome. I have your pictures up on my wall! Must share the pic...
And if I had a Ferrari, I would want a naked Eames on it too :D

I think the quaint tearoom idea originally sprung from a joke about the ubiquitousness of coffeeshop AUs, and just refused to leave me alone. I've started work on it and it's kind of fun trying to shape all the Roman things like hairstyles and patterns into a modern theme!

I'll take just the naked Eames - not that the car isn't lovely, but a naked Eames can make me tea and do the vacuuming!

Oh, he's so lovely! I love how his gaze is direct and unashamed, but there's something faintly submissive, or at least waiting, in the tilt of his shoulder and head. And you've captured the bulk of him perfectly. Are you sure this work isn't finished? The texture of his skin is so pretty as it is, and his expression is just pinned to Arthur/the viewer. Perfect! I'm 100% smitten.

Also, I don't know the history of dinoception, but Arthur with that big gun and even bigger foes is just badass.

Date: 2015-02-03 11:51 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Oh man, I wish naked Eames was nearing finished! I will no doubt be struggling with him several months from now, cursing my foolish belief that I could pull off realism with minimal reference. It's just a very good thing Tom Hardy has such an incredibly hot body that I can bear to look at for so long.

(Also, thank you so much for the lovely encouraging words! I hope the final thing lives up to expectations....)

The story of Dinoception is basically stolen from one of Trojie's WIPs, where the team extract from a mark who has a dinosaur obsession and Arthur has yet again failed to do the militarisation check but really, the whole thing is just an excuse for me to draw Eames fighting a T-Rex with a rocket launcher because yes, I am still 12 years old.
