Well, now I know why my poll card has been taking its time getting to me: it turned up at my parents address - and they live nowhere near me. I registered to vote almost two months ago, I guess my application either got lost in the mail or screwed up by the electoral roll office. It won't change anything, it's too late now, but I'm going to phone them tomorrow and snarl at someone to make me feel better.

Fuck. This is the second time I've been unable to vote. The first time wasn't my fault either, I applied for a postal vote which my father then screwed up by registering me as still living at home. I suppose I can comfort myself in the fact that the party I was going to vote for doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning here.

Dammit, I'm pissed off tonight.

ETA: Temper tantrum over all thanks to the brilliant [livejournal.com profile] clara_swift who let me know I could still get a proxy vote. Now the only thing I need to worry about is my mother giving my vote away to the looniest party she can find...

Can't you arrange for a postal vote?

Can I do that? I know the deadline for registering to vote is over, but I can't find anything about a deadline for an application for a postal vote.

The info's on the back of the polling cards. On mine the deadline for a postal vote was 20th April but it says you can apply for a proxy vote until 27th April. You need to speak to your parents and get them to see what the onfo on your polling card says. You might still be able to get a proxy vote.

You are an absolute star! Yes, I can get a proxy vote - I'll be calling them up first thing tomorrow and saying I'm away in Manchester on business. ;)

Thank you so much! You've got me right out of my pissy mood.

Nope, looks like I can't. Deadline for postal vote was the same as registering. Bugger. I suppose I'm somewhat to blame for not calling up to find out whether I was on the list before the deadline.

Check - because the back of my polling card says something different...

could you please snarl at them on my behalf too ? I mean, they're the administration, regardless of the country, and it's fucking incompetent in every country! I asked for my social security card three months ago and still haven't got it, and if I don't have it, I can't be reimboursed when I go to the doctor, dentist, etc, unless I fill in a bunch of papers every time and it takes forever to get the money back. ARGH. so just snap at them, they deserve it.

I can do - shall I put on an indignant french accent to make it even more convincing? ;) Urgh, government bureaucracy, it's fun, isn't it? Hey, look on the bright side - at least you have a dentist, you don't have a two-week wait to see the nurse, and you don't get the doctor's receptionist announcing loudly to a full waiting room "Oh, you're getting a prescription for the contraceptive pill, is it?". At least I hope you don't.

haha, I'd love to see you try on a French accent !

Ha, yes, I love the discretion in medical offices. that and chanting your name, address and phone number to the whole waiting room. good thing it as for the pill and not gonorrhea. I'm not sure how you can walk out of there without melting first.

hot icon.

oh and woulnd't it be just hilarious if the party lost by one vote ?

I kno it's not possible but the thought of it is amusing. I think youd choke to death. at least you wouldn't need to do the whole wedding charade anymore. everything has a silver lining.

Well, the party would have to lose by one seat, and that seat would have to lose by one vote... so not likely! And even more so where I live - here it's a very close race between the party that's currently in government (which I despise) and the smaller 3rd party whose policies I disagree with too much to vote for. The other party, the main opposition doesn't have a chance here - but they do where I'm registered, so I'm going to apply for a proxy vote and get my parents to cast my vote.

Not that I'm voting for them because I like them, I just want the current government out, and a new set of fuckwits on TV for me to shout at.
