I grew up in Singapore, but I can't stand the heat either. I bet it'd be lovely in winter or early spring. And it wouldn't be very touristy (yet), unlike places like Turkey and Egypt.
I have to kidnap you and take you on holiday one of these days. Not only would you be far better at convincing me to buy stuff at the souks and bazaars, but I sort of miss being questioned about lesbian threesomes.
I'll go, but then you'd be stuck with me for the rest of your life (or at least until you decide to kick me out) b/c once I leave the U.S. (in my current state or status rather) I won't be allowed back. But wow, it would be worth it! Gorgeous gorgeous places. Someday God will give me a break and I will have a normal life...
Screw it, just come and I'll let you sleep on my sofa afterwards. ;)
Seriously though, I do feel for you. After being able to have a job, I think not being able to leave the country would be the hardest thing to bear. :(
I don't think Syria is considered that dangerous - certainly no more than Egypt. One of my labmates is from Syria and I'm going to ask her more once she gets back from maternity leave.
I've seen plenty of police with machine guns at airports here. They make me feel very uncomfortable too.
