Travel plans

Hooray, wife and I have finally booked our holiday this year - a week split between Budapest and Vienna, leaving next week. Not my favourite time of year to travel but we didn't have much choice, having discovered that once you are financially stable and can afford to travel without having to stay in the dirtiest dodgiest backpacker hostels you can find, you just can't get the time off work. Anyone who knows of things to do in either of those places, please advise me for I have no clue. I just picked Budapest after googling Hungarian food and getting peckish.

But yes, holiday! I AM GOING TO GO HAVE FUN AND NOT THINK ABOUT HOW SHITTY MY MASTERS IS TURNING OUT.

However, I need to rewatch this to calm myself down after the horror of all the extra charges Jet2 springs on you. £33 for one item of checked baggage and then another £30 to check it in! EACH WAY. Thieving fucktards, you're not getting that from me. I will only take carry-on and will wash my knickers in my hotel sink just to spite you.

And, and, and, the weekend after we get back from that I am going down to Oxford to meet up with ainsoph15 for Old Roman Shit and Boozing, then two weeks after that it's up to Scotland to be fed Nutella crepes by goblin_dae and gush over her new little terror kitten!

My, it's almost like I have a social life.

I knew there was someone (2!) in Vienna I knew! Oh brain, you are getting old and unreliable. Um, we're very fond of Old Historical Stuff - churches, museums, that kind of thing (I will get myself a travel guide eventually!). And if you know of any restaurants/cafes in the centre that aren't complete tourist traps, that would also be awesome. :D

well, obviously you have to go to Schloss Schönbrunn (http://www.schoenbrunn.at/en/home.html) and Stephansdom (http://www.stephanskirche.at/index.jsp?langid=2&menuekeyvalue=2) then.

restaurants and cafes - it depends if you just want cool places or are ready to face the grind of real Viennese cafes. ;-)

I haven't been there either so I'm very excited about it! And the food looks SO GOOD - I wish I was going in winter because it seems like it's really hearty warming stuff.

And Vienna - it would be really terrible of me to go all the way there and not eat twice my bodyweight in pastries, right?

I was sick in Budapest but make sure you go down to the river at night because it's gorgeous there. Also the palace at the top of the hill overlooks the city and is quite breathtaking. There are lots of large buildings and florid statues (not my taste but still). Sorry I don't remember much more than that.

My knowledge of Bratislava comes entirely from Eurotrip (magnificent film, btw). I hear you can live like a king for about 67p.

1. Find poor starving PhD student (yes, I know this doesn't sound like the right way to start off, but trust me. It's like playing the stock market - buy when cheap kill off and claim life insurance sell when they've increased in value).

Oh, well, I am sure we will find pubs eventually. Man, this holiday is so last minute - other than book flights and B&Bs I have done nothing, not even look up things to do there. I even keep forgetting that we're going on Sunday! But I'm sure I'll have a lovely time, they both look like amazing cities.
