Resolution for next year: be much, much better than I've previously been about remembering other people's birthdays, because I have been utterly overwhelmed by all the lovely awesome people who remembered mine and sent me messages and cards - thank you all so much, you really made what was going to be just another day feel really special! :D (well, my mother did try her best by phoning me up from India and getting my whole extended family to sing Happy Birthday down the phone to me, but my rather ungracious reply was "Huh? Ung... time zones... 7am here... *SNORE*") I'm sorry if I've taken a while to respond to them and I know I'm a little behind with leaving comments, my excuse is that I've been on the road a lot (wrote this entire post last night in a hotel lobby, and their free wireless got switched off just as I hit post. STUPID BUDGET CHAIN HOTEL), but I will try my best to catch up in the next few days!

Anyway... certain delightful people spoiled me with SHINY BIRTHDAY THINGS!

[livejournal.com profile] demon_rum wrote me the most glorious, glorious TEA PORN. Um, in which the Reverend St. John and Captain Aquilaine have a lovely cup of tea together, and it is utterly chaste and civilised and nothing kinky happens. Especially not any caning, no. Guys, I got a fic about my very favourite pairing (shush Esca, you and Marcus are a very very close second!) DRINKING TEA. AND DOING OTHER STUFF (THAT IS NOT KINKY AT ALL). ZOE IS HAPPY.

[info]the_little_owl drew an utterly hysterical comic featuring Tribune Placidus discovering that when you pray to the mammoth-riding goddess for a hot barbarian of your own, she tends to go a bit overboard fulfilling your request. I still can't stop laughing at it, especially the expressions of the horses at the end. I'd be a bit worried about the horse at the front, Tribune...

Also! While I'm linking stuff (and have enough laptop battery left), have another art and fic rec:

Something Star Wars: once again [livejournal.com profile] swcajolings proved that anything I can draw, she can draw better... and squickier. Jar Jar threesome not enough for your sordid, depraved tastes? How about a charming, completely NSFW foursome featuring Jar Jar, Obi-Wan, Padme and one of her handmaidens? [livejournal.com profile] swcajolings, don't you ever switch to drawing sappy G-rated baby animal fluff instead of your magnificent, stomach-churning porn, I don't think I will ever forgive you if you do.

Something Eagle: I'm still working my way (slowly!) through the Eagle and Sutcliff Yuletide fics, but I am utterly, utterly in love with this one, it is so beautifully written - exiit ad caelum, (Esca/Cottia/Marcus). OT3s never really interested me until recently, but now, now I cannot get enough of them.

And because I had to do something with my internet-free evening, nicked from a number of people:

Your favourite film watched this year?
Um... I've been sitting here for ages trying to answer this, and I think of one that stands out. There were a lot that I liked, but none blew me away. Best made film was probably Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, but I guess the one that gave me the most overall happiness was The Eagle, even if it wasn't the most amazing film ever.

Your favourite book read this year?
Going to be totally nerdy here and say Tom Holland's Rubicon. I knew a bit about the ancient Romans before, but this book really filled in all the missing gaps and taught me so much more (oh you wacky Romans, crucifying dogs is not a healthy pastime).

Your favourite fanfic read this year?
Overall, Passion & Profession by far - I don't think I've ever reread a story so many times or gotten so invested in the characters. I tend to think of that one as more of a Jane Eyre AU than an Eagle AU because of the setting and how Marcus' character is a bit different to the canon version, so-
Eagle: Until All the Songs are Sung - this fic made me cry twice when I read it, and it still does. This would be tied with another amazing, long fic, but as it is still being edited I will put it on my 2012 favourites list. :D
Merlin: Destiny that Darkly Hides Us - I have not read much Merlin fic because I am a bit iffy about reading Merlin/Arthur (I love the boys to bits, I just see them more as little brothers and don't really want to read sex between them!), but I tried this because I looove long historical AUs, and my god, it was beautiful. One of those fics that stays with you for days and days.
Inception: Towards Zero - I have really loved getting into Inception fic this year and I have so many favourites, but this one was one of the first I read and it really made me fall headfirst into Arthur/Eames.

Your favourite album or song to listen to this year?
I don't have my computer and itunes to give me the correct answer, and it would probably be something really embarrassing anyway. So I'm going to go with Mumford & Sons and avoid looking terribly uncool.

Your favourite TV shows of the year?
I have not watched nearly as much TV as I have wanted to! :( I tried Game of Thrones and liked it a lot more than I expected I would, The Borgias was entertaining enough and very pretty, and Merlin S4 has been fantastic. Oh dear, that really is all I've watched this year.

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
That after getting terribly excited about a shiny new fandom, a lot of people who wrote amazing Eagle fic faded out after one or two fics. There are still some fantastic writers in it, though I sometimes feel that half the fandom is interested in things I do not care for. But overall I am very happy in it!

Your TV boyfriend of the year?
Ian Hislop is my TV boyfriend EVERY YEAR.

Your TV girlfriend of the year?
Merlin's Morgana, looking totally hot in black lace, green eye-make-up and messy hair.

Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Getting into Eagle fandom, getting to know a whole load of really lovely and talented people (some of them in person!) and getting a really incredible response to my arty offerings. Even Channing Tatum approved of something I'd drawn! Fandom-wise, this year has been amazing. And I have read so much fic! Before this year I hardly read anything aside from old favourites, and now (partly thanks to my Kindle, which I am so much in love with) I read so much, and from multiple fandoms.

The most missed of your old fandoms?
My love for Star Wars has waned a lot, so I don't miss it terribly. Batman Begins, I guess. That one died long before there was a sufficient amount of Bruce/Ducard slash. :(

The TV you haven't tried yet, but want to?
Downton Abbey! When I have more free time after the thesis and an internet connection I can actually download stuff with, I will be all over that show.

Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
Um... I am not sure? Nothing really fandom-related, but I cannot wait for The Dark Knight Rises - I really really hope I end up seeing that with my best friend, as Batman Begins was how we found each other. And I am getting excited about The Grey, because Liam Neeson in peril and kicking ass. What is there not to like?

Right! Off on the road again, trying to read papers and type up talk notes without being car-sick and puking all over the laptop. Hm, I think I am quite looking forward to getting back work now. Hope everyone had a lovely holiday, and it not, um, that you didn't end up killing any relatives?

Just flying by to wish you a Happy New Year! Thank you for linking to my Tribune Placidus. I hope, he'll entertain some more people (before he has to run from the horse ;>).
As for the Biggest Fan Anticipations: yes, I totally agree!

Happy New Year, Owl! One of the best parts of last year was getting to see you again at Tem and Ell's wedding, and I hope your 2012 is an awesome one and that you end up going to Rome and seeing all sorts of Old Roman Shit. :D

Yes, and after visiting all sorts of Old Roman Stuff, I hope to travel more and to meet you again. I can't promise anything for 2012 beyond the plan to got to Rome, but let's see what Fortuna or the Fates deal out. I should go to the Three Matrons' shrine and offer up ... whatever there.

Ugh!

Sorry I forgot to wish you a Happy Birthday! I hope you had one.

I'll have to try and make sure I meet you and pass on a significantly huge bar of chocolate some time this year!

::hugs::

Don't worry about it, really! :) I am super-hopeless at remembering other people's, and so I always feel vaguely guilty when people remember mine.

I will take the chocolate though! Give me! :P Right, I will try to make sure I end up somewhere like London at least once this year because it would be lovely to see you again. *hugs*

god, i need to catch up with that tea porn. and everything. it's ridiculous that over x-mas i planned to catch up with all the fic but failed miserably!

the YUletide OT3 is amazing, right? Like, it's usually a pairing I go to when there's nothing better around (or if it's [livejournal.com profile] seascribe cause she's boss at wrtiting them) but the one you recced and A Clear View of the Sea (which is massive) completely sold me on the OT3.

Date: 2012-01-01 08:10 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] motetus.livejournal.com
Me too, me too. *weeps* I'm almost caught up on all the Eagle fic, but my plan for the holiday was to clear the backlog of other fandom fic on my Kindle. What did I decided to read first? The Student Prince. So now I'm only a fraction of the way through the massive thing (still struggling with the St. Andrews weirdness!) and all that other fic hasn't been touched. Bad strategy, Zoe!

I *love* Cottia/Marcus/Esca fic now, which is funny because I thought I could never relate to anything poly. And so many of the people who write it are so good (yeah, seascribe is probably mainly responsible for me falling in love with it so much!). I am thinking I might pick an OT3 Big Bang fic, because it's shameful that I haven't tried drawing Cottia yet. :D

Heh if it's any comfort I often feel like half the Eagle fandom is interested in things I don't care for too. But luckily the other half is totally interested in stuff I love :)

I had forgotten that the Dark Knight Rises will be released next year, wheee! (I think the best thing about reading everyone's end of year memes is that I keep being reminded of awesome films/shows/books to look forward to in 2012)

Date: 2012-01-01 07:57 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] motetus.livejournal.com
Indeed, and the half whose interests align with mine produce amaaazing stuff! I should not be so greedy, and I should count my blessings that the fandom hasn't got into certain tropes and kinks that are um... *really* not my cup of tea that some other fandoms I read in have (yes Inception, I'm looking at you!). Really, it is quite a lovely little fandom and I do hope it keeps going strong in 2012.

I am a little wary about Catwoman's role in Dark Knight Rises, but I'm sure it will be good! I hope there's more Bruce Wayne in it, because that was my biggest complaint about Dark Knight - not enough of him without the mask, which is when he's at his most interesting. Also, Christian Bale's face is far too pretty to be covered up too much. *is shallow*

I'm glad your birthday was good. :D

I loooooove that OT3 fic you recced, and Carmarthen's story too, and this fandom in general, even though I also sometimes feel like half of it are here for reasons I do not share. But that is okay, 'cause it takes all kinds and it's a good fandom.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

Whenever I start to feel like I'm being too much of an entitled brat, I remind myself that in my last fandom, 90% of it seemed to be into stuff I was not. So I should be feeling spoiled! And the stuff I *do* like is AMAZING. It has made the last year a much happier one, and I'm so glad I ended up in it and met all sorts of brilliant people. Like you! :D

Thank you, and I hope your 2012 is a very happy one! Hey, did you know I drew 44 things last year (45 if you add half a collab and the half-finished cavemen)? I only worked that out the other day and it rather scares me. I do not think I will have the time next year to come anywhere near that, but I will totally be spending what I have in our cosy little fandom. :D

45? Holy shit, that's massive! I'm not sure how many things I've done, because it'd be hard to decide what to count (manips only? covers? banners? headers? wallpapers?), but the most complicated didn't take more than 10, maybe 15 hours, and your pics take so much more work than mine!

Whee! Happy belated birthday and happy new year! And I for one am very glad to have met you in Eagle fandom, and I am sorry if drawing little chainmail links on my behalf has made your arm fall off. :( Hey, I wonder if I can make that my wallpaper now that New Computer can actually open the file... huh, no, that doesn't seem to work. Bizarre.

The dead dogs thing just cracks me up, especially when the geese sit on cushions and watch. Oh, Romans.

Thank you! Aw, I am most happy to have met you too! You know, until I tripped and fell into Eagle fandom, I never thought I would end up friends with so many people whose talent awed me so much. But I have, and it is awesome! (don't worry, you have been replaced as Target Of My Frustrated Rage by the person who is making me draw rocks. Lots and lots of rocks)

I have this theory that the ducks were entirely behind the barbarian invasion and drugged the dogs' dinner. Then they get to sit on their little purple cushions cackling evilly every year. Come on, if there's any animal capable of such a thing, it would be geese.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Hooray! Mr Taxman only gave me £20 (ha, I cannot even remember where I put the cheque...) but yay, I am glad you can afford to come! Get booking your tickets before they get crazy expensive - if they're not terribly cheap I will pay the difference, and shut up I want to and can afford to.

Keep your fingers crossed for the interview in a couple of weeks, and maybe by July you'll only have to fork out for a train ticket to Glasgow. How awesome would just thinking "Yeah, I should go see how Nim is doing this weekend" be rather than having to plan it half a year in advance be? :D

Just hopping on a train to Glasgow would be awesome - make sure you wear sexy underwear for the interviewers if dazzling them with your intellect doesn't work. Another spare target for Nimue's claws would be so convenient.

Thankyou for all your lovely drawings and being one of the amazingly friendly faces around the Eagle. Also for the inspiration of your Happy Gay Farmers; it lit a fuse in my writing brain which had not been active since I was 16 (not that I'm blaming you for the quality of the product).
