Resolution for next year: be much, much better than I've previously been about remembering other people's birthdays, because I have been utterly overwhelmed by all the lovely awesome people who remembered mine and sent me messages and cards - thank you all so much, you really made what was going to be just another day feel really special! :D (well, my mother did try her best by phoning me up from India and getting my whole extended family to sing Happy Birthday down the phone to me, but my rather ungracious reply was "Huh? Ung... time zones... 7am here... *SNORE*") I'm sorry if I've taken a while to respond to them and I know I'm a little behind with leaving comments, my excuse is that I've been on the road a lot (wrote this entire post last night in a hotel lobby, and their free wireless got switched off just as I hit post. STUPID BUDGET CHAIN HOTEL), but I will try my best to catch up in the next few days!
Anyway... certain delightful people spoiled me with SHINY BIRTHDAY THINGS!
demon_rum wrote me the most glorious, glorious TEA PORN. Um, in which the Reverend St. John and Captain Aquilaine have a lovely cup of tea together, and it is utterly chaste and civilised and nothing kinky happens. Especially not any caning, no. Guys, I got a fic about my very favourite pairing (shush Esca, you and Marcus are a very very close second!) DRINKING TEA. AND DOING OTHER STUFF (THAT IS NOT KINKY AT ALL). ZOE IS HAPPY.
the_little_owl drew an utterly hysterical comic featuring Tribune Placidus discovering that when you pray to the mammoth-riding goddess for a hot barbarian of your own, she tends to go a bit overboard fulfilling your request. I still can't stop laughing at it, especially the expressions of the horses at the end. I'd be a bit worried about the horse at the front, Tribune...
Also! While I'm linking stuff (and have enough laptop battery left), have another art and fic rec:
Something Star Wars: once again
swcajolings proved that anything I can draw, she can draw better... and squickier. Jar Jar threesome not enough for your sordid, depraved tastes? How about a charming, completely NSFW foursome featuring Jar Jar, Obi-Wan, Padme and one of her handmaidens?
swcajolings, don't you ever switch to drawing sappy G-rated baby animal fluff instead of your magnificent, stomach-churning porn, I don't think I will ever forgive you if you do.
Something Eagle: I'm still working my way (slowly!) through the Eagle and Sutcliff Yuletide fics, but I am utterly, utterly in love with this one, it is so beautifully written - exiit ad caelum, (Esca/Cottia/Marcus). OT3s never really interested me until recently, but now, now I cannot get enough of them.
And because I had to do something with my internet-free evening, nicked from a number of people:
Your favourite film watched this year?
Um... I've been sitting here for ages trying to answer this, and I think of one that stands out. There were a lot that I liked, but none blew me away. Best made film was probably Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, but I guess the one that gave me the most overall happiness was The Eagle, even if it wasn't the most amazing film ever.
Your favourite book read this year?
Going to be totally nerdy here and say Tom Holland's Rubicon. I knew a bit about the ancient Romans before, but this book really filled in all the missing gaps and taught me so much more (oh you wacky Romans, crucifying dogs is not a healthy pastime).
Your favourite fanfic read this year?
Overall, Passion & Profession by far - I don't think I've ever reread a story so many times or gotten so invested in the characters. I tend to think of that one as more of a Jane Eyre AU than an Eagle AU because of the setting and how Marcus' character is a bit different to the canon version, so-
Eagle: Until All the Songs are Sung - this fic made me cry twice when I read it, and it still does. This would be tied with another amazing, long fic, but as it is still being edited I will put it on my 2012 favourites list. :D
Merlin: Destiny that Darkly Hides Us - I have not read much Merlin fic because I am a bit iffy about reading Merlin/Arthur (I love the boys to bits, I just see them more as little brothers and don't really want to read sex between them!), but I tried this because I looove long historical AUs, and my god, it was beautiful. One of those fics that stays with you for days and days.
Inception: Towards Zero - I have really loved getting into Inception fic this year and I have so many favourites, but this one was one of the first I read and it really made me fall headfirst into Arthur/Eames.
Your favourite album or song to listen to this year?
I don't have my computer and itunes to give me the correct answer, and it would probably be something really embarrassing anyway. So I'm going to go with Mumford & Sons and avoid looking terribly uncool.
Your favourite TV shows of the year?
I have not watched nearly as much TV as I have wanted to! :( I tried Game of Thrones and liked it a lot more than I expected I would, The Borgias was entertaining enough and very pretty, and Merlin S4 has been fantastic. Oh dear, that really is all I've watched this year.
Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
That after getting terribly excited about a shiny new fandom, a lot of people who wrote amazing Eagle fic faded out after one or two fics. There are still some fantastic writers in it, though I sometimes feel that half the fandom is interested in things I do not care for. But overall I am very happy in it!
Your TV boyfriend of the year?
Ian Hislop is my TV boyfriend EVERY YEAR.
Your TV girlfriend of the year?
Merlin's Morgana, looking totally hot in black lace, green eye-make-up and messy hair.
Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Getting into Eagle fandom, getting to know a whole load of really lovely and talented people (some of them in person!) and getting a really incredible response to my arty offerings. Even Channing Tatum approved of something I'd drawn! Fandom-wise, this year has been amazing. And I have read so much fic! Before this year I hardly read anything aside from old favourites, and now (partly thanks to my Kindle, which I am so much in love with) I read so much, and from multiple fandoms.
The most missed of your old fandoms?
My love for Star Wars has waned a lot, so I don't miss it terribly. Batman Begins, I guess. That one died long before there was a sufficient amount of Bruce/Ducard slash. :(
The TV you haven't tried yet, but want to?
Downton Abbey! When I have more free time after the thesis and an internet connection I can actually download stuff with, I will be all over that show.
Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
Um... I am not sure? Nothing really fandom-related, but I cannot wait for The Dark Knight Rises - I really really hope I end up seeing that with my best friend, as Batman Begins was how we found each other. And I am getting excited about The Grey, because Liam Neeson in peril and kicking ass. What is there not to like?
Right! Off on the road again, trying to read papers and type up talk notes without being car-sick and puking all over the laptop. Hm, I think I am quite looking forward to getting back work now. Hope everyone had a lovely holiday, and it not, um, that you didn't end up killing any relatives?

Date: 2012-01-01 10:40 pm (UTC)Keep your fingers crossed for the interview in a couple of weeks, and maybe by July you'll only have to fork out for a train ticket to Glasgow. How awesome would just thinking "Yeah, I should go see how Nim is doing this weekend" be rather than having to plan it half a year in advance be? :D
