OH GOD WHY DID I DECIDE TO DO A PHD. TOO MUCH HARD WORK. ALSO, SICK OF MOUSE RECTUMS.
...I just got offered the project I wanted. I'm moving to Glasgow.

Date: 2012-01-16 05:43 pm (UTC)Omg, I was just wondering how you got on. WE ALL KNEW YOU COULD DO IT. I'M SO PROUD OF YOU. You deserve it, after all the hard work you've done :D :D :D :D
(And now, more time for drawing
pornart. y/y??? ;D)no subject
Date: 2012-01-16 07:05 pm (UTC)Alas, I think there will be less time for drawing not-porny art. :( Will have to work MUCH MUCH harder than I've been doing here. But not *no* time for drawing! Drawing porn is part of a healthy balanced lifestyle. *nods*

Date: 2012-01-16 05:47 pm (UTC)Did your supervisor get his finger out and send the reference, or did you manage to get it without it?
Yay! \o/

Date: 2012-01-16 06:51 pm (UTC)I have no idea whether the supervisor sent his today - I guess so, seeing as he did say they couldn't make an offer without both references. I think it was the one from my undergrad supervisor that won it - he's always been massively supportive of me even though I left his lab 3+ years ago. Must visit him soon and bring him whiskey!

Date: 2012-01-16 08:07 pm (UTC)I mean, it'll obviously be horribly unhealthy for both of us given how we eat when together...but oh well. Sacrifices must be made. Who needs arteries?

Date: 2012-01-16 08:20 pm (UTC)Maybe we should get into healthy food if we plan to outlive our rich old husbands (wait, where is mine?) and retire in our staffed-by-hot-semi-nude-men villa? I will get eating vegetables. After I have eaten the chocolate pudding in my fridge. And then the key lime pie. I mean, it would be a waste of food if I didn't...

(OMG, and then when you finish - the interpretive dance!)

Date: 2012-01-16 10:14 pm (UTC)(oh wait, I know. A poorly-paid scientific career with no prospects and probably no jobs by the time I graduate. HOORAY!)
Um, this project is on E. coli O57:H7, aka the bug that gives you spectacular diarrhoea. Maybe I shouldn't go for the special effects in my dance...

Date: 2012-01-16 10:32 pm (UTC)Also I don't know what your problem is with rectums. A) They are a fascinating piece of muscle, and B) wtf are you doing with mouse rectums? Perhaps I do not want to know.
no subject
Date: 2012-01-17 10:55 am (UTC)I have nothing against rectums yet. I think the infection takes place in the lower digestion system of the mouse but you look at it with live imaging rather than killing and slicing up the poor rodent. And then they recover from the infection
and get sent to a nice lab mouse retirement home in the country!Mind you, now I rather like swcajolings's image of me putting indignant mice in some sort of harness and peering up their asses with a massive magnifier attached to my head while I take notes...

Date: 2012-01-17 12:13 am (UTC)Do I want to know what one has to do in order to become sick of mouse rectums?
no subject
Date: 2012-01-17 12:03 pm (UTC)Um, the project may involve a bit of mouse model work - but it is a nice infection model! The mice recover fully from the infection and you monitor the infection using live imaging, so I wouldn't have to kill any of them. Makes me feel much better about it!

Date: 2012-01-17 05:00 pm (UTC)Ha, so, it turns out that even though this guy is technically a microbiologist, he does a fair bit of structural stuff - yes, some crystallography. I don't think my project will have much of that though - it's dealing with a mouse model for E. coli O57:H7 (though it's a different bacteria for that which I've forgotten the name of... something nice that doesn't kill the animal) and looking for targets for new drugs (is partially funded by a big pharma company). I'm okay with a little bit of structural work on the side (esp. now I'm getting to grips with NMR), I just didn't want ALL STRUCTURAL ALL THE TIME.
I love that you're the one person I can babble away about the details to and not worry about confusing. :D

Date: 2012-01-17 12:55 pm (UTC)Hrm, I do not think Manchester or I will miss each other that much - I never managed to make friends here and am not particularly attached to it. Though I will miss my favourite shabby little Vietnamese restaurant that does the most amazing food ever.
